It was late in 2012 – The Year Of Giving Back – and Maggie came into the office. Maggie was in her late 60’s and her and her husband were obviously financially at least somewhat “poor” by our standards. Maggie had a rough life and it showed. Her right eye was injured badly and disfunctional. Her hair was thin and she just looked much older than her age.
She had come into the office and asked to speak with me. She sat across my desk and talked about everything but insurance. I was busy so I thought I’d try to move the conversation along by asking how I could help. When Maggie said she didn’t really need anything I got up to escort her politely to the door…and suddenly Maggie just hugged me and started to cry.
I asked what was the matter and she said, “I was just having a bad day and as I drove Preferred and saw the flamingoes and knew if I went in there I’d feel better, and I do.”
I was, and still am, in shock. It was an amazing moment because I knew then we had become a group of people who did so much more than insurance.
Today I am still amazed. I hear my team talk about people they work with and how they adore them. They help people in need with no recognition or fan-fare. And I know the Preferred purpose: To Protect And Improve Peoples’ Live So They Can Focus On What Really Matters In Life – is alive and well.
