When shopping for insurance, start with the agent.
- Does my agent take care of me now?
- Do they answer my questions fully?
- Do I understand my policy and coverages?
- Does my agent help me make wise decisions?
- And most importantly are they available when I need help?
If any of these are in question, it may be time for you to look for an agent that gives you the service you deserve.
But how do you do that?
The key is to call and ask them to quote your insurance. A good agent will want to talk with you and get to know you and your situation. They will go over your policies and explain what you have and make recommendations (like an umbrella policy). If they just ask you to send them your current coverage pages, look out. All they are going to do is give you a quote with the same mistakes your current agent made.
The next order of business is understanding what happens in a real life catastrophe.
Imagine you are in a serious auto accident and someone is permanently injured…or worse. Do you have enough coverage when you are served with a lawsuit? (ask about an umbrella policy) What if no one is injured, but your car is totaled? Can you afford the deductible? What about rental car coverage?
Now picture your home destroyed by a tornado. Do you have enough coverage to rebuild? Can you buy all the new furniture and clothes you need? What if the neighbor’s child gets hurt on your property? What if your child slanders someone on Facebook?
Life insurance is extremely important as well but that is an entirely different topic. Follow this link to learn more : How Much Life Insurance Do I Need?
Price is obviously important, but price is not everything. You want a great value, but you have to put a value on what you need covered and how good the agent is at helping you with that. You may be saving $500, but if things aren’t right and your have a claim, that won’t mean much. We never want you to be in that situation.
